Employment Agreement

Our student employees are essential to the success of our daily operations. Each one of you has a part in creating our shared success story! In order for us to achieve our standards of excellence, there are some basic expectations that we have for each of our student employees. They are listed below:

  • Follow the dress code for the department (see handout).
  • Arrive for work at or before your scheduled shift start time.
  • Punch in/out for all the shifts that you work.If you forget to punch in/out for work, fill out a timesheet according to the associated timelines.
  • Read the student employee manual provided to you including both the general and the area specific sections.
  • If you can’t work an assigned shift, follow the substitution policy for your area to get the shift covered.
  • Actively participate in the performance partnership process each semester (performance review).
  • Actively participate in the employee discipline process as appropriate. 
  • Promptly respond to communications from SCPS including list serve messages, direct emails from supervisors and/or student leads, cell phone calls, and text messages.
  • Usage of non-SCPS cell phones while at work is limited to emergencies only, and phones should be on vibrate at all times.
  • If you are handling money, make sure that the money is secured at all times according to office procedures. 
  • Follow the necessary safety procedures in your work area at all times.
  • You are responsible for monitoring your federal work-study award.  Once you earn the entire award, the department will not be able to keep you employed.

Student Employment Services Rights and Responsibilities

  • Student employees have the responsibility to report to work on time. Be ready to work at assigned time.
  • Student employees have the responsibility to notify their employer of class schedule changes affecting their time; illness and request for time off.
  • Student employees have the responsibility to give their employer an honest days work for an honest day’s pay.
  • Student employees have the responsibility to learn their job and perform at optimum level.
  • Student employees have the responsibility to work as a team member.
  • Student employees have the responsibility to maintain safety and security on the job at all times.
  • Student employees are considered Syracuse University employees with the same rights and responsibilities offered full time staff exclusive of benefits.
  • Student employers have the responsibility to provide proper training for student employees in order for them to accomplish their job.
  • Student employers have the responsibility to acquaint student employees with their supervisor and encourage them to talk about any difficulties that may arise in the work place.
  • Student employers have the responsibility to pay student employees a pay rate equal to the work being done. Raises in hourly wage should be given when and where appropriate.
  • Student employers have the responsibility to establish proper and fair work schedule for student employees. Hours must coincide with the student employee’s academic schedule. Advance notice of schedule change is required.
  • Student employers should provide student employees with feedback on their performance. Student employees should receive a performance review at least once during the academic year.
  • Student Employers should assure fair and equal treatment on the job for all student employees. Remember that they are Syracuse University employees!
  • Student employers need to remember that student employees are students first! There can be no encroachment on their academic endeavors.
  • Student employers must offer the same appeal process tendered to all Syracuse University employees.
  • Student employers must complete an accident report on any injury for all student employees. Medical assistance should be sought where it pertains. Student employees are covered by Worker’s Compensation for on the job injuries.
